The scarce resource of social housing is open to abuse. Subletting and tenancy fraud are big business, particularly in parts of the country where the supply of housing is very restricted. Some applicants will lie to obtain housing. Some will live elsewhere, while letting their social home at exorbitant rents. Officers have to be vigilant in detecting signs of subletting - it could be subletting of certain rooms in a property, or the property as a whole - social landlords need to be proactive in pursuing the fraudsters.
